LAKELAND, FL - Senior outfielder Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) had three hits, including a three-run homer in the third inning, and senior Jared Balbach (Pine Bush, NY) fired seven strong innings to lead the Sacred Heart baseball team to an 11-1 win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Saturday morning.
After UMBC scored an unearned run in the top of the third, freshman John Murphy (Seymour, CT) led off the bottom of the frame with a double. He went to third on a single by Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) and both runners scored when Tedesco blasted his first homer of the season to left field.
Gondek made it 4-1 in the fourth with an RBI double. Senior Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY) made it 6-1 with his first homer of the year, a two-run shot to center, in the fifth. Murphy drove home another run in the inning with a two-out single to left center that scored Chris Whittemore (Lavellette, NJ) who had walked.
The Pioneers put the wraps on the game in the seventh with three more runs, two of them plated by Gondek with a triple to right center.
Balbach went seven innings, allowing just one unearned run. He struck out three and walked one. Senior Chris Zaccherio pitched the final two innings.
The Pioneers are scheduled to return to action on Friday against UConn at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport at 3:30 p.m.
