March 10, 2007
CLEARWATER, FL - Senior pitcher Jay Monti (Marlboro, NY) pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout as the Pioneer baseball team came away with a 3-0 win over the University of Notre Dame Saturday morning.
Monti, 2-1, struck out four without issuing a walk. He gave up just a first-inning double to Jeremy Barnes and a seventh inning single to Mike Dury. The senior has now pitched 19 innings this spring without issuing an earned run.
The Pioneers, 4-6, got the only run they would need in the first inning on an RBI double from junior Jeff Hanson. Senior Bobby McKee singled with two outs, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Hanson's double down the left field line.
SHU got a couple of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore Ryan Nemcek led off the inning with a single to center. Jovan Rodriguez then reached on an error by the UND shortstop. McKee loaded the bases with a single to left. Hanson lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Nemcek and Rodriguez scored on a groundout by Jason Maiella.
