WINTER HAVEN, FL - Senior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) continued his hot hitting, and junior Jared Balbach (Pine Bush, NY) threw seven strong innings to lead the Sacred Heart baseball team to a 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky Monday afternoon. The win was the third straight for the Pioneers and lifted them to 4-2 this season.
Junior Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) led off the bottom of the first for SHU with a singled and went to third on a double from Ryan Lynch (N. Babylon, NY). Hanson drove both runners home with a double to deep center. Hanson, who had homered in his previous five games, just missed extending his school record to six.
"The center field fence is 420 feet here," said head coach Nick Giaquinto. "On a normal field he had his sixth."
Hanson scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Heppner (Aqubogue, NY) and the Pioneers had a 3-0 lead. SHU took a 4-0 lead when Hanson singled home Lynch in the third after a leadoff triple.
Balbach gave up his lone run in the fifth inning when hit the lead off batter and then yielded a single. The run scored on a double play grounder to Hunter Phillips. He went seven innings, allowing just three hits, striking out six and walking three.
The Pioneers scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Tedesco. He finished the contest with three hits.
