WINTER HAVEN, FL - Senior Jeff Hanson (Woodstock, NY) had three hits, including a seventh-inning two-run homer, that led the Sacred Heart baseball team to a 5-3 win over Central Michigan in Florida Saturday.
Central Michigan, 3-7, got solo homers off SHU starter Chris Barthel (Northford, CT) in the third and fourth innings from Dale Cornstubble and Nate Theunissen to get within a run. The Chippewahs tied it with an unearned run in the fifth.
Barthel worked the first six innings, striking out six and walking two. Chris Zaccherio (Manhasset, NY) pitched perfect seventh and eighth innings.
Tedesco led off the SHU seventh by drawing a walk. After MJ Schifano struck out, Hanson blasted his two-run shot - his fourth of the season in four games - to five the Pioneers the 5-3 lead.
Junior Mike Drowne (South Hadley, MA) came on for the Pioneers in the ninth. After giving up a pinch-hit single to the lead off batter, Sam Russell, Drowne got the next hitter to ground into a double play to Tyler Santos at third. He earned his second save of the season by getting the final batter to lift a harmless fly ball to left.
The Pioneers will take on UConn Sunday morning at 9:00.
