TULSA, OK - Dennis Bigley struck out 10 batters in eight innings of work and Oral Roberts University pounded out 13 hits in a 7-0 win over Sacred Heart, Friday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Bigley (2-0) allowed just four hits and walked two batters against the Pioneers, who were playing their season opener. The right-handed junior struck out two batters in the second, sixth and eighth innings before giving way to Dane Towery (Mustang, Okla.) to start the ninth. Towery then picked up where Bigley left off, striking out the side to end the game.
The Golden Eagles (4-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Boomer Welles two-run single. ORU broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning, getting a two-run double from Grant Plumley and a two-run single from Jeff Tuttle, chasing Charles Ristano (0-1) from the game. Plumley delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth to complete the scoring.
The Pioneers never really threatened, and only once did a Sacred Heart base runner reach scoring position, that coming in the sixth when Brian Rojee doubled and reached third on a wild pitch.
Plumley led ORU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Ryan Welborn was 3-for-4 with a stolen base, and Tuttle and Josh Lex each had two hits.
The Golden Eagles and Pioneers will play a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday after coaches from both teams agreed to move Sunday's game due to the threat of rain.
