NEW BRITAIN, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team used a seven-run fourth inning to upend LIU Brooklyn, 12-3 on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers (15-31, 10-12 NEC) jumped out to the early lead over the Blackbirds (24-22, 12-10 NEC) to take the opening game of a four-game set at New Britain Stadium.
Five Pioneers recorded multiple hits in the game with senior Anthony Capozziello recording a team-high three hits. The left fielder also paced the lineup with three runs batted in as eight batters contributed an RBI in the win.
SHU struck in the bottom of the first against southpaw Patrick Clyne as co-captain PJ DeFilippo lifted the RBI double off the wall in left field. Senior James Taubl eluded trouble in the top of the fourth, escaping the bases loaded jam.
Capozziello led off the fourth with his fourth home run in the last seven games with a shot over the right-field wall. The Pioneers picked up six hits in the inning for seven runs to take the 8-0 with the big hits coming from redshirt sophomore Jake Frasca with the two-RBI double before Capozziello capped the inning with a two-RBI double of his own.
The Pioneers recorded another big inning in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Stephen Thibault recorded the RBI single to right field before co-captain Cody Doyle recorded a two-RBI single to left field for the 11-0 advantage. A RBI groundout by sophomore Elijah Brown in the next inning drove in the Pioneers final run of the game.
LIU Brooklyn would get two runs back in the top of the eighth as Alex Briggs recorded the one-out two-run home run off of junior Hal Shaw. The Blackbirds recorded one run in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring.
Taubl went seven and a third innings in the start, scattering eight hits to just one run. Shaw and junior John Cerretani finished off the game for SHU in relief.
The Pioneers continue the series against LIU Brooklyn at New Britain Stadium tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
