FAIRFIELD, Conn.--Nick Restaino officially assumed the position of head baseball coach at Sacred Heart University this week, following the conclusion of the 2017 season. Restaino also announced the promotion of Wayne Mazzoni and Tim Kiernan.
"I am humbled and grateful for this opportunity and am thankful to Bobby and Nick for entrusting me with the future of Pioneer baseball," said Restaino in November when the announcement was made. "It has been an honor to work beside Coach Giaquinto the past three seasons, and I am committed to continuing the legacy that he has built at SHU."
On the Pioneer staff for three seasons, Restaino helped the to Pioneers to the 2015 NEC Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance, three NEC Tournaments and two NEC Championship games. Restaino takes the reins from Nick Giaquinto.
Mazzoni has been on the Pioneer staff for 11 seasons and will continue in his role as pitching coach. In addition, he will assume the role of recruiting coordinator. Keirnan has been a volunteer assistant coach the past three seasons. He will work with the Pioneer hitters and infielders.
"Wayne and TK are great coaches, they are both important to this program and have been for many years," said Restaino. "I am excited to have them on staff going forward as I know we are all committed to the continued success of Pioneer baseball."
The Pioneers finished the 2017 season 23-36 overall, 14-13 in the NEC, reaching the NEC Tournament for the ninth straight year and the NEC Championship game for the eighth time during that stretch.
