Pioneers Defeat CCSU 2-0 to Reach Sixth Consecutive NEC Title Game
NORWICH, Conn – The Sacred Heart Pioneers broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the eighth on the way to a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut State Saturday afternoon to reach their sixth consecutive NEC Championship game at Dodd Stadium. Sacred Heart will play Bryant in the NEC title game, a re-match of last year’s championship game, on Saturday afternoon.

Pioneers Fall to Bryant in NEC Championship Game
NORWICH, Conn – Sophomore Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) drilled a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but it was the Bryant Bulldogs who scored four runs in the 12th to win the 2014 NEC Championship Saturday afternoon at Dodd Stadium. The Pioneers finish the season with a record of 29-28, falling in the NEC Title game for the second consecutive game.

Pioneers Stay Alive in NEC Tournament with 13-8 Win over Wagner
NORWICH, Conn – Junior left-hander Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) pitched six strong innings and the Sacred Heart offense came alive with 18 hits on the way to a 13-8 victory over Wagner Friday afternoon to stay alive in the NEC Tournament at Dodd Stadium. The Pioneers improve to 28-27 on the season and will face the loser of Central Connecticut State and Bryant tomorrow afternoon at noon.

Pioneers Fall 4-3 to CCSU in NEC Tournament First Round
NORWICH, Conn – Attempting to the tie the game with two outs in the ninth, sophomore Jesus Medina (New York, NY) was thrown out at home by CCSU first baseman Dom Severino and the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils escaped Thursday night with a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart in the NEC Tournament at Dodd Stadium. With the loss, the Pioneers enter the loser’s bracket of the Tournament and will take on Wagner tomorrow afternoon at noon.

Short and Kerski Earn All-New England Honors
FAIRFIELD, Conn – Freshman Zack Short (Hurley, NY) and senior Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) were named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association’s First and Second teams Wednesday afternoon. A voting process involving the coaches of all teams in New England determines the three teams. Short was named first team shortstop, while Kerski earned second team starting pitcher honors.

NORWICH, Conn - Five Sacred Heart baseball players earned All-Northeast Conference honors Wednesday evening as announced by the conference at the annual NEC Tournament banquet at Dodd Stadium. Junior right-hander James Cooksey (Norwalk, CT) earned first team honors, while freshman Zack Short (Hurley, NY), senior Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT), freshman Keith Klebart (Orange, CT) and sophomore Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) were all named to the second team.

SHU Baseball Set for Northeast Conference Tournament
The Sacred Heart Pioneers return to Dodd Stadium looking for their third Northeast Conference Championship in four seasons. SHU comes in as the number three seed after entering the past two tournaments as the two seed. SHU won back-to-back titles in Norwich in 2011 and 2012, before falling to Bryant in last year’s championship game. Sacred Heart captured its first NEC Championship in 2006.

SHU Baseball Cancelled Friday, Series to Conclude Saturday
The Sacred Heart baseball team’s game at CCSU Friday afternoon has been cancelled and moved to tomorrow afternoon. Beginning at noon on Saturday, SHU and CCSU will finish game two of the series, which was suspended in the seventh inning on Thursday due to darkness, and then play the final two games of the series in a doubleheader.

Pioneers Defeat CCSU in 13 Innings, Clinch Berth into NEC Tournament
NEW BRITAIN, Conn – The Sacred Heart Pioneers scored four runs in the ninth inning to tie Central Connecticut State and then walked off for an 8-7 win in 13 innings Thursday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended in the top of the seventh inning with SHU trailing the Blue Devils 4-3. With the win in game one, the Pioneers clinched a berth into their sixth consecutive NEC Tournament. SHU is now 12-9 in the NEC this season.

FAIRFIELD, Conn – Due to weather concerns on Friday afternoon, Sacred Heart baseball’s regularly scheduled doubleheader at Central Connecticut State has been moved to tomorrow afternoon, starting at 1 p.m. SHU and CCSU will then play a single game (seven-inning) on Friday and then wrap up the series with a nine-inning single game on Saturday.

Pioneers Sweep Sunday Doubleheader; Split Series with Wagner
STATEN ISLAND, NY – After continuing and losing yesterday’s rain-shortened game 6-2, the Sacred Heart Pioneers rebounded to sweep a doubleheader from the Wagner Seahawks Sunday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. SHU won game one 4-3 and then dropped the Seahawks 3-1 in twelve innings to finish off the sweep. With the wins, SHU splits the four-game set with Wagner and improves to 11-9 in the NEC this season and 24-24 overall.

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Sacred Heart and Wagner were only able to get through six innings Saturday afternoon before a rigorous rain storm stopped the action and suspended game one of the Saturday doubleheader. The Pioneers and Seahawks will resume today’s game in the top of the seventh and then play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, beginning at noon.

BATON ROUGE, LA – Sophomore Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) hit a solo homerun in the top of the first inning but that was it for the Pioneers as the ninth ranked LSU Tigers scored four runs in the second inning and cruised to a 8-1 win Wednesday night at Alex Box Stadium.

SHU Baseball Opens Season Saturday at Tulane
The Sacred Heart baseball team will begin its 2014 season Saturday afternoon at Tulane University, the first game of a three-game series against the Green Wave. Like last year, Sacred Heart will begin the season in Louisiana for eight games. Following Tulane, SHU will take on Nicholls State, LSU, and then finish the trip with a three-game series at Southeast Louisiana University.

SHU Baseball Season Opener Moved to Saturday
Due to travel issues, the Sacred Heart baseball team’s season opener against Tulane will be delayed one day. Instead of beginning their season Friday night, the Pioneers will now begin their three game series against the Green Wave on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

SHU Baseball Selected Second in NEC Preseason Coaches Poll
FAIRFIELD, Conn – The Sacred Heart baseball team has been selected to finish second in the Northeast Conference this season, according to the 2013-14 Preseason Coaches Poll, announced Thursday by the conference. The Pioneers were picked to finish behind the Bryant Bulldogs, the team that beat them to win the 2013 NEC title last May. SHU was a game away from winning a third straight NEC title after tying a program record with 34 wins last season.

SHU Baseball "Reads-A-Loud" at Black Rock School in Bridgeport
(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart University Baseball team recently volunteered their time giving back to the community by participating in a Read-a-Loud program, on Friday at the Black Rock School in Bridgeport. This year’s event marks the 5th time the SHU baseball team has participated in the Read-a-Loud program.

Sacred Heart Baseball Announces Horn and Leiningen as Captains
FAIFIELD, Conn – Sacred Heart University Baseball Coach Nick Giaquinto has announced that senior catcher Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) and senior starting pitcher Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) will be team captains this season. Both Horn and Leiningen have been vital parts of two Northeast Conference championships and will look to lead the Pioneers to a third title in four seasons.

SHU Baseball to Host 17th Annual "Winter Workouts" Baseball Camp
FAIRFIELD, Conn - Join Head Coach Nick Giaquinto, assistant coaches Wayne Mazzoni, Alex Trezza and the SHU baseball team for "Winter Workouts" at the William H. Pitt Health and Recreation Center on the campus of Sacred Heart University. The camp will take place on four consecutive Sundays, 1/12, 1/19, 1/26 from 5-7pm, as well as 2/2 from 4-6 pm.

FAIRFIELD, CT – The Sacred Heart Baseball team announced the signing of six to National Letters of Intent Wednesday afternoon. The incoming Fall of 2014 class consists of 3 position players and 3 left-handed pitchers. The newest Pioneers are LHP Ethan Lonardelli and outfielder/ RHP Dan Schock from Cheshire High School, LHP Nick Rubino from Guilford High School, catcher Cody Dolye of Avon Old Farms, infielder Alex Perry of Syosset High School in Long Island, and LHP James Taubl from Christian Heritage High School.
