Hello SHU baseball fans, and welcome to the third chapter of the 2013 SHU Summer Baseball Notebook, our periodic check-in on the Pioneers who are playing in collegiate summer leagues through the offseason.
In the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate Baseball League Right-handed sophomore Nick Morrissey (Howell, NJ) has notched an impressive 1.69 earned run average in 16 innings pitched for the Monmouth Monarchs. The incoming junior has tallied 16 strikeouts en route to a 2-0 record and four saves. Morrissey played in the ABCCL All-Star game earlier this month.
In the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League sophomore Jesus Medina (New York, NY) is batting a solid .293 with 16 walks and 5 stolen bases for the Staten Island Tide. The Tide are currently in first place with a record of 23-9.
In the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, first baseman Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ) is batting .279 with 7 doubles and 9 RBI in 111 at bats for the Seacoast Mavericks. For the Torrington Titans, right-handed pitcher Connor Landers (Durham, CT) has a stout 1.28 earned run average with 17 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched.
In the New England Collegiate Baseball League, both Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) and Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) have seen action for the Mystic Schooners. Flint is batting .268 with 18 runs scored, 16 walks and seven stolen bases. Stoddard has allowed just six earned runs in 17.2 innings of work and has stuck out 18.
In the prestigious Cape Cod League, Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) has allowed two earned runs in 14 innings pitched for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Kerski has a 3-1 record with 14 strikeouts.
In the Hamptons League, side arm throwing Dan Wertz (Cross River, NY) has pitched 11.1 innings for the Sag Harbor Whalers, notching a 1.58 ERA with 7 strikeouts.
In the Albany Twilight League, both Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) and Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) have seen action for the Albany Athletics. Horn was named Tournament MVP of the Albany Baseball Fest on June 30th after going 10-14 with 14 RBI in the tournament. The Athletics are currently in first place with an outstanding 24-2 record.
Former SHU shortstop John Murphy (Seymour, CT) has appeared in 25 games for the State Island Yankees, the single A affiliates of the New York Yankees. Murphy has 18 hits, including a solo homerun on June 22nd. The Yankees drafted Murphy in the sixth round of this year's MLB Draft.
Another former SHU great, Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) has allowed just 3 earned runs in 23.2 innings en route to a 3-1 record with the Astros of the Rookie Gulf Coast League. The hard throwing right-hander has struck out a team-high 36 batters. Scribner signed with the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent.
