(Hamden, CT) – The Sacred Heart Baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Quinnipiac Bobcats Saturday afternoon, winning 4-2 in 10 innings in game one before taking game two 1-0 in seven innings behind the second straight complete game and first career shutout by Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY).
Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) scored the SHU's first run in game one, coming home on a double play in the third. The Pioneers made it 2-0 in the fifth when MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) scored on a throwing error by QU second baseman Chris Migani while attempting to turn a double play. However, Quinnipiac tied the game in the eighth on a two-out two-run single by Gabe Guerino.
The Pioneers retook the lead in the 10th inning when JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) came home when Migani committed another throwing error attempting to turn an inning-ending double play. Chris Whittemore (Lavellette, NY) drove in an insurance run with an RBI single to left.
Schifano earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.2 innings of relief without allowing a run. Tedesco and Edwards both knocked three hits for the Pioneers. Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) started for SHU, scattering nine hits in six scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
In game two, Leiningen and Bobcats starter Kyle Birdsall matched scoreless innings until John Murphy (Seymour, CT) delivered the game's only run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the seventh. Murphy also made several difficult plays defensively at shortstop throughout the afternoon.
Leiningen retired the side in order in the seventh to complete his second win of the year. The freshman lefty allowed just three hits with two walks and a strikeout in his seven shutout innings.
The Pioneers improved to 4-6 in NEC play and 11-12 overall with the sweep. They take on the Bobcats in another doubleheader Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Quinnipiac.
