Equestrian Clinches IHSA Zone 2 Region 5 Championship

SIMSBURY, CONN (February 22, 2014)--After 10 regular season competitions, the Sacred Heart equestrian team has claimed the IHSA Zone 2 Region 5 Championship. This past Saturday, Hayley Mena captured first place in Novice Fences and Novice Flat at the IHSA hosted by Fairfield University at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn.  Mena's two first place finishes were part of an impressive six blue ribbons for the Sacred Heart Equestrian team on the day. The Pioneers finished fourth in the competition where the top five teams were separated by just one point each.

In what was the last show of the regular season, Katie Gray (Colchester, Vt.) and Cortney Sevigny (Thompson, Conn.) finished first in Intermediate Flat, while Gabriella Tauro (East Lyme, Conn.) had a strong showing and finished first in Intermediate Fences.  Rounding out Sacred Heart's first place finishes was Emma Sands (Hopkinton, Mass), who finished first and second in Novice Flat and Novice Fences respectively.

The Pioneers took home two second place ribbons with Allison Buccos (East Moriches, N.Y.) finishing second in Open Fences and Open Flat.  Katie Gray (Colchester, VT) and Sara Ann Scorpa (Lanesboro, MA) rounded out Sacred Heart's 11 top three finishes by taking third in Open Fences and Novice Flat. 

Individual Pioneers who have qualified will compete in the IHSA Zone 2 Region 5 Championship for Individual Qualifiers held this Saturday at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club in Gales Ferry, Conn.
