Sands High Point Rider as Pioneers Tie for First

STORRS, CONN. (November 16, 2013)—Freshman Emma Sands (Hopkinton, Mass.) of the Sacred Heart equestrian team earned High Point Rider Title in tough competition against UConn's Hayley Snell (Intermediate) and Trinity's Jenn Dorfman (Open) Saturday afternoon at the UConn IHSA Z2R5 in Storrs, Conn. After multiple tests from USEF 1-19, it was Sand's style and workmanship, which edged out Dorfman and claimed the title. The Pioneers finished in a three-way tie with UConn and Trinity, but continue to hold onto the top spot as the Z2R5 High Point Team.

Sands earned her way to the top of the competition by taking first in Novice Fences and Novice Flat, which qualified her for the high point rider ride off.

In her final competition as a Pioneer, Danielle Belson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.), who will be graduating at the end of the semester, took first in Walk/Trot/Canter. The bitter-sweet victory for the senior gave Belson the final points she needed to qualify for Regional Championships.

Katie Gray (Colchester, Vt.) remains undefeated in both flat and fences this season after taking first in Intermediate Flat today. She is 4-0 this season in flat competition and 2-0 in fences competition.

Jocelyn Alfieri (Darien, Conn.) took home two second place finishes. The junior finished second in Open Fences and Open Flat, which qualified her for the Regional Championship in Open Fences, and extended her lead as the Z2R5 High Point Open Rider by six points over Fairfield's Irene Peluso.

Riley Boath is now 2-0 this season in Walk/Trot after taking home another first place ribbon Saturday. Katherine Byrne (Annandale, Va.) recorded Sacred Heart's final first place finish in Novice Fences.

Jessica Chaloux (Newtown, Conn.) and Melissa Yacubich (Shoreham, N.Y.) each snagged a second place finish. Chaloux finished second in Walk/Trot/Canter, while Yacubich was second in Novice Flat.

Taylor DiBella (Holmdel, N.J.) qualified for the Regional Championship in Intermediate Flat after finishing fourth in the even today. She also took third in Intermediate Fences. Alison Brosky (Manhassett, N.Y.), Allison Buccos (East Moriches, N.Y.) and Hayley Mena (Huntington, N.Y.) also took home third place ribbons in Intermediate Fences, Open Fences and Open Flat, and Novice Flat respectively.

The Pioneers are back in action on November 23 at UConn.
