With 24 years of sports information experience, Gumbs is in his eighth year in charge of the publicity efforts for the University's 32 varsity athletic teams.
He started his career while still a student at Franklin Pierce College from which he holds a degree in English and minor in Communications. He served as Sports Information Director at Western New England College in Springfield, MA for 14 years, before spending two years at Central Connecticut State.
Gumbs also works for Major League Baseball at Fenway Park, handling their online game day software and is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). He also contributed a chapter to the just released book, Spahn, Sain, and Teddy Ballgame: Boston 's (almost) Perfect Baseball Summer of 1948> which was published in 2008 by Rounder Books.
He worked for six years as television color commentator for the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, and the University of Massachusetts ice hockey program, and currently works with Jeff Holtz on the Pioneer radio network when his schedule permits. He also has ten years of experience as a collegiate assistant basketball coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy and Western New England.
Originally from Ledyard, Gumbs has two daughters, Emily (21) who is a senior at SHU, and Hannah (15). He lives in Middletown with his girlfriend, Barbara.
