The Sacred Heart softball team will host cross-town rival Fairfield on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the 2014 home opener. The Pioneers are 8-8, coming off a successful weekend playing in the UMBC Classic. Sacred Heart won three out of the four games beating Bowling Green (3-1), UMBC (2-1), and most recently, Saint Peter’s (5-4). The weekend was highlighted by senior Annie Dreher’s (Saugus, Calif.) walk-off homerun to beat Saint Peter’s. Sacred Heart will also play two doubleheaders this weekend against CCSU on Saturday, March 29th (1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.) and LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, March 30th (12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.).
The SHU women’s lacrosse team will play a make-up game against Fairfield on Wednesday, March 26th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 15-8 loss to Monmouth on Saturday. Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, N.Y.) lead the team in that game with five goals and two assists, while Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, NY) had 13 saves.
Men’s tennis will face off against Hofstra on Wednesday, March 26th at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers are currently on a three game losing streak, falling most recently to conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson 5-2. Kevin Budrawich (New Caanan, CT) and Anthony Savio (Bangalore, India) managed to pick up wins in single matches, but it proved not to be enough. The Pioneers hope to bounce back a pick up a much needed home win against Hofstra before they travel to play Army on Friday, March 28th, at 4:00 p.m.
The Pioneers have a busy weekend ahead of them with two matches on both Saturday, March 29th and Sunday, March 30th. On Saturday, the Pioneers will play Holy Cross at 12:00 p.m. and then St. Francis Brooklyn at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday they will play Hartford at 10:00 a.m. and Wagner at 3:00 p.m.
The Sacred Heart women’s tennis team will play Rhode Island on Thursday, March 27th at 2:30 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 6-1 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. A bright spot for Sacred Heart was senior Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ). She won matches in both singles and doubles alongside Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY). The Pioneers also have two matches this weekend, at Bryant on Saturday, March 29th at 1:00 p.m. and against Hartford on Sunday, March 30th at 10:00 a.m.
The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will host EIVA foe Rutgers-Newark on Thursday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers bounced back from three straight losses by beating UPR decisively last Thursday 3-0. Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) and Christopher DeLucie (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) both had 10 kills, while Travis Vonholt (Lindenhurst, NY) had six blocks. Sacred Heart will also play at conference opponent Harvard on Friday, March 28th at 7:00 p.m., and a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29th against Springfield (5:00 p.m.) and Vassar (7:00 p.m.).
Margaret Vogel (South Acworth, N.H.), Allison Buccos (East Moriches, N.Y.) and Noelle Bianculli (Ramsey, N.J.) will head to the University of Findlay in Ohio on March 29 to compete for a chance to advance to the National Championship at the IHSA Western Semi Final Championship. Last weekend, Vogel and Buccos claimed blue ribbons in Novice Horsemanship and Intermediate Horsemanship respectively, while Bianculli was named Reserve Champion in Intermediate Horsemanship qualifying for the semi final.
SHU baseball are hoping to host Stony Brook on Wednesday, March 26th at 3:30 p.m. for the home opener at the Ballpark Harbor Yard. The Pioneers have gained momentum after a four game sweep of Cornell this past weekend. In the second doubleheader of the series, Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) earned the win in game one of the afternoon, giving up two runs in seven innings and recording six strikeouts. Freshman Jason Foley (North Bellmore, NY) dominated game two with 6.2 magnificent innings, allowing just the one run. Sacred Heart looks to continue this success against Stony Brook this week. The Pioneers will also play at St. Johns this weekend. They will play a doubleheader against the Red Storm on Saturday, March 29th at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, March 30th at 1:00 p.m.
The Sacred Heart men’s golf team will compete in the Whiting Turner Towson Invitational in Grasonville, Maryland on Sunday, March 30th. The Pioneers last competed at the Lonnie Barton Invitational on March 11th, finishing fifth out of 10 teams. Ross Kronberg (New Canaan, Conn.) was the top team scorer, being tied for twelfth place. The Whiting Turner Towson Invitational will run until Tuesday, April 1st.
