This Week in Pioneer Sports
The Sacred Heart baseball team will play at Hartford on Tuesday, April 8th at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers are currently on a four-game winning streak after a four-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson in the Northeast Conference opener this past weekend. Sacred Heart won the final game of the series 9-7 with the help of a base clearing double by Keith Klebart (Orange, Conn.) and a save by pitcher James Cooksey (Norwalk, Conn.). The Pioneers will have another set of double headers this weekend. They will play NJIT on Saturday, April 12th at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. and also on Sunday April 13th at the same times.
The Sacred Heart men’s tennis team will play against Hartford on Tuesday, April 8th at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers split the games during the weekend, beating St. Francis Brooklyn 6-1 on Saturday and losing to Saint Joseph’s 6-1 on Sunday. Freshman Anthony Savio (Bangalore, India) currently has the best individual match record on team (6-4), while the rest of the team has losing match records. Sacred Heart also has a busy weekend ahead of them, facing Wagner and Fordham on Friday, April 11th at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and Connecticut and Bryant on Saturday, April 12th at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 13th at 3:00 p.m.
The Sacred Heart women’s tennis team will travel to face off against Providence on Wednesday, April 9th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers are 5-10 this season and are currently on a two-game losing streak falling most recently to Quinnipiac 6-1. Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, N.Y.) earned the Pioneers only point at number-five singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Sacred Heart will also play at Saint Peter’s on Thursday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m., and Massachusetts on Saturday, April 12th at 1:00 p.m.
The Sacred Heart women’s lacrosse team will host NEC opponent Mount St. Mary’s on Friday, April 11th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers won their last game against Saint Francis U on April 6th 14-10 in come-from-behind fashion. Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, N.Y.) led the team with four goals and two assists, while Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.) had seven saves. The Pioneers will continue conference play Sunday, April 13th when they take on Wagner at 1:00 p.m. at home on Campus Field.
The Sacred Heart softball team will play at cross-town rival Fairfield Wednesday, April 9th at 3:30 p.m. When these two teams last played, Sacred Heart left with a nail-biting 3-2 victory. Victoria D'Addario (Lincoln Park, N.Y.) singled to center field in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the game winning run. The Pioneers are 9-13 this season after dropping their last five and hope to rebound with a repeat of their victory against the Stags back. Sacred Heart will also open a nine-game homestand when they host Quinnipiac on Thursday, April 10th at 3:00 p.m. This weekend, Bryant and Robert Morris come to Pioneer Park for a pair of NEC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.
The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will play their season finale at Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers are on a five-game losing streak, losing most recently to Penn. State on "Senior Night." Will Leclerc (Fairfield, CT) lead the team with 11 kills, while Sean Nelson (East Hampton, CT) had four blocks. Sacred Heart hopess to end the season with a win.
The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will compete in the D1 New England Championship at Mohegan Sun Country Club on Friday, April 11-13. The Pioneers competed strongly in their last competition at the Rhody Invitational this past weekend. Sacred Heart finished first on day one of the tournament and second on day two in an eight-team tournament. Peter Ballo (Stamford, Conn.) won the individual title with a three-over 74.
Men’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart men’s track and field team will compete at the Rider University Invitational on Saturday, April 12th at 11:30 a.m. The Pioneers competed in four different meets during the weekend. Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, N.Y.) set a new program record in the 5,000 meters, running a time of 14:35.56 at the Stanford Invitational while Drayke Jackson (East Northport, N.Y.) won the B decathlon with 6,205 points at the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational.
Women’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart women’s track and field team will compete at the Rider University Invitational on Saturday, April 12th at 11:30 a.m. The Pioneers competed in four different meets during the weekend. Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, C.T.) ran a personal best of 35:32.42 in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational, while Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, N.Y.) ran a 10:41.67 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at Stanford, qualifying her for the ECAC and New England championships.
The Sacred Heart women’s rowing team will compete at the Spring Metropolitan Regatta on Saturday, April 12th. Jaclyn Smith (Williston Park, N.Y.) and Catherine Lott (Roxbury, Conn.) won the women's varsity two race on Sunday on the second day of the season opening Sacred Heart Invitational in Shelton. The women’s novice eight crew also finished third in its race with a time of 8:44.42.
