This Week in Pioneer Sports

Baseball
The Sacred Heart baseball team will travel cross-town to play a doubleheader against Fairfield on Tuesday, April 29th at 2:00 p.m. The Pioneers split their last series against LIU Brooklyn, winning two out of the four games including the series finale (10-4). Nick Morrissey (Howell, NJ) was credited with the win, while senior Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT) went three-for-five at the dish with two runs scored and an RBI on senior day. The Pioneers will play on the road for the rest of the season, including a four game series this weekend against NEC rival Bryant in a one versus two matchup starting Friday, May 2nd at 3:00 p.m.

 

Softball
The Sacred Heart softball team will travel to play a doubleheader against Manhattan on Tuesday, April 29th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers are struggling in the month of April, currently in the midst of a 12-game losing streak. In their last game against LIU Brooklyn, SHU lost a 2-1 heartbreaker. Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, CA) blasted her fourth homerun of the season for the Pioneers’ only run of the game. Sacred Heart will also play at Connecticut this week on Thursday, May 1st at 3:00 p.m.

 

Men’s Lacrosse
The Sacred Heart men’s lacrosse team will play the first game of the Northeast Conference Tournament, which is hosted by top-seeded Saint Joseph’s, against Bryant on Thursday, May 1st at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 14-10 win on senior day against Mount. St. Mary’s. Seniors Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ont.) and Alex Miller (Ridgewood, N.J.)  led the team with four goals each. Senior Matt Gannon (Huntington, N.Y.) also led the team with four assists. With a victory, the Pioneers would advance to the championship game on Saturday, May 3rd.

 

Men’s Golf
The Sacred Heart men’s golf team will compete in the Northeast Conference Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona, Florida on Friday, May 2nd until Sunday, May 4th.  The Pioneers finished third out of ten teams at the D1 New England Championship back on April 13th. Peter Ballo (Stamford, CT) carded a final round, two under 70 on Sunday to win his second straight individual title.

 

Men’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart men’s track and field team will compete at the NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, May 3rd at 8:45 a.m. and Sunday, May 4th at 9 a.m. The Pioneers last competed at the Yale University Springtime Invitational on April 27th. Adam King (Columbia, CT) won the high jump, clearing 6'2.25", while Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY) won the triple jump with a leap of 48'2.75". With only a few meets left in the season, the Pioneers look to rack up some top five finishes this weekend at Robert Morris University.

 

Women’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart men’s track and field team will compete at the NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, May 3rd at 8:45 a.m. and Sunday, May 4th at 9 a.m. The Pioneers last competed at the Yale University Springtime Invitational on April 27th. Kolbi Smith (Valatie, NY) won the shot put with a throw of 46'8.75", while on the track, Angela Harrison (North Haledon, NJ) finished second in the 100 meters in a time of 12.43 seconds.
