This Week in Pioneer Sports

Women’s Tennis
The Sacred Heart women’s tennis team will host Rhode Island on Tuesday, April 15th at 2:30 p.m. The Pioneers are 3-3 in the month of April, but dropped their last match 6-1 to Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon. Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY) won her third consecutive match at number one singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). She leads the team with twelve wins this season. Sacred Heart will end the season at the Northeastern Conference Championship on Thursday, April 17th up until Saturday, April 19th.

 

Men’s Tennis 
Sacred Heart men’s tennis will host cross-town rival Fairfield on Tuesday, April 15th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers are 6-11 and look to gain some momentum before the Northeastern Conference Championship. Anthony Savio (Bangalore, India) has an overall record of 9-5 which is leading the team while Justin Pagan (Flushing, N.Y.) is second with a 12-12 record. Sacred Heart will end the season at the NEC Championship on Thursday, April 17th up until Saturday, April 19th.

Baseball

The Pioneers are coming off a successful weekend, winning three games out of their four game series with NJIT. The series was highlighted by the 8-2 and 8-3 sweep in their doubleheader on Sunday. The Pioneers got great production from Freshman Keith Klebart (Orange, CT) who went five-for-nine with two RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader. Sacred Heart will host conference opponent Mount St Mary’s in a four game series. It will begin on Thursday, April 17th at 3:00 p.m. with a double header on Friday, April 18th at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and will end on Saturday, April 19th at 1:00 p.m.

Men’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heat men’s track and field team will compete at the Holy Cross College Decathlon on Wednesday, April 16th through Thursday, April 17th. The Pioneers last competed at the Rider University Invitational, in which they finished third out of seventeen teams. Sacred Heart benefitted from Marc Troiani’s (Valhalla, N.Y.) first place finish in the shot put with a throw of 54'2". Sacred Heart will also compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University on Friday, April 18th, the Morgan State University Legacy Track & Field Meet on from April 18th to April 19th, and end the weekend off at the Mark Young Yale Track & Field Invitational at Yale University on Sunday, April 19th.

 

Women’s Track and Field

The Pioneers last competed at the Rider University Invitational, in which they finished second out of twenty teams. Kolbi Smith (Valatie, N.Y.) won the shot put with a throw of 47'3.75". Mareena DiMilia (Claryville, N.Y.) also had a pair of top-five finishes, placing second in the hammer throw (174'8") and fourth in the shot put (38'1.25"). Sacred Heart will also compete at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University on Friday, April 18th, the Morgan State University Legacy Track & Field Meet on from April 18th to April 19th, and end the weekend off at the Mark Young Yale Track & Field Invitational at Yale University on Sunday, April 19th.

 

Softball
The Sacred Heart softball team will host a doubleheader against Yale on Wednesday, April 16th at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Pioneers won their last game against Robert Morris 4-3 in which Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) went 3-for-6, scoring two runs. Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) was credited with the win. The Pioneers will play a doubleheader at Wagner on Friday, April 18th (12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.) and on Saturday, April 19th against Fairleigh Dickinson (1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.)
