FAIRFIELD, CONN. (January 7, 2014)—Sacred Heart University Executive Director of Athletics Bobby Valentine announced today the hiring of Chris O’Connor as the new Associate Athletic Director of External Relations, effective January 13, 2014. O’Connor comes to Sacred Heart from Fairfield University, where he most recently served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Communications.
“I am excited to join the Sacred Heart University family and begin working with the staff, coaches and student-athletes,” said O’Connor. “I appreciate Bobby and Brad providing this opportunity and look forward to getting started.”
A 1998 graduate of Marist College, O’Connor has an extensive background in collegiate athletics administration, having worked at Central Connecticut State University, LIU Brooklyn, as well as his alma mater before returning to Fairfield for a second tour of duty in 2005. He has helped organize and run numerous NCAA Championships, including the 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2013 Women's Basketball games held in Bridgeport, the 2009 and 2011 Men's Ice Hockey East Regionals as well as the 2005 Men's Basketball Final Four in St. Louis. At Fairfield, Chris is responsible for the Stags' digital and social media efforts as well as the creation and development of FairfieldStags.tv.
“Chris comes to us with a wealth of experience and knowledge of external affairs at the Division I level and will be a true benefit to Sacred Heart athletics as we continue to build up our championship program” said Deputy Athletic Director Brad Hurlbut. “We could not be more pleased that he is coming on board.”
O’Connor lives in Waterbury with his wife Ashley, who is a programming executive at ESPN, and daughter Abby, 3.
