The Sacred Heart University Department of Athletics will honor cancer survivors at its Saturday, January 21 basketball doubleheader at the William H. Pitt Center. Both Pioneers squads welcome Northeast Conference foe Wagner, with the women's game tipping off at 1 p.m. and the men's game at 3:30 p.m.
Cancer Survivors are invited to a reception, sponsored by Zazi's Mediteranean Grill, between games on Saturday. All survivors in attendance are also invited to be part of halftime recognitions at both games. Those interested in attending the games should contact the SHU Ticket Office at 203-396-TIXX.
Saturday's doubleheader serves as the #TeamSHU tip-off for the 2017 CT Challenge Bike Ride. The Pioneers have helped raise over $30,000 the past three years for the Cancer Survivor Center. Fans in attendance on Saturday that make a donation supporting the CT Challenge and #TeamSHU will receive a Pioneer water bottle.
The men's basketball coaching staff will be taking part in the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer program, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of basketball Coaches. The men's staff will be wearing sneakers with their suits to draw awareness to the campaign.
The Saturday doubleheader will also feature ceremonial jump balls with Terry O'Connor, the 2017 Barnum Festival Ringmaster as the Barnum Festival begins its 2017 celebration. The Barnum Festival was founded in 1948 as a way to build community spirit and celebrates the world-renowned, and Bridgeport resident, P.T. Barnum, while promoting the Greater Bridgeport Area. The boys fifth and sixth grade teams from the McGivney Center and Hall Neighborhood Center, both supported in part by the Barnum Festival, will play an exhibition at halftime of the men's game.
The SHU Kids Zone will also be available, with bounce houses for youth.
